|Beyond the Band Edge: Extending the Reach of Colloidal Nanocrystals in Active Photonic Devices
Colloidal nanocrystals have generated tremendous interest for use in integrated lasers when researchers first observed their potential in optical amplification in the year 2000. The first material in which this was observed was based on simple CdSe Quantum Dots. Since then, however, a large number of new materials and geometries have been discovered, each of which is being intensively investigated to improve their performance. Currently, the most advanced material under development for application is still based on the same CdSe/CdS Quantum Dot system.
This thesis aims to contribute to this material library by conducting comprehensive material research on a new candidate for laser operation, with the goal of presenting an alternative with superior performance. It demonstrates an initial demonstration of laser operation with impressive performance, providing hope for the future creation of highly advanced integrated laser devices. Furthermore, this work conducts further explorations at both the material and device levels to unravel the details of laser operation and optimize the functionality of these integrated devices. Through these efforts, a promising path is being paved to unlock their full potential.
