Abstract

Silicon Photonics Photonic Integrated Circuits (PIC) based on CMOS-compatible technology platforms are now widely used in telecom, datacom, sensing, quantum, AI,… Several major semiconductor foundries offer a Silicon Photonics platform. Some basic building blocks are not available yet, however, such as the laser and linear phase modulators. These require integration of novel materials. This includes III-V materials for lasers and amplifiers, and graphene and other 2D-materials for realizing compact electro-absorption modulators and non-linear devices, ferroelectric materials for realizing phase modulators. I will first introduce the background and some fabrication issues related to the Silicon Photonic ICs themselves and then report on recent work on new materials that can be monolithically integrated on silicon or silicon nitride photonic ICs to enhance their functionality.
