Neuromorphic computing enabled by integrated photonics

Neuromorphic computing is a new emerging discipline at the interface between machine learning and photonics. The idea is to build optical chips which are in their layout inspired by the brain, and that for information processing applications like classification problems. Thanks to the high speed and lower power consumption of photonics, this has the potential of being both faster and more energy efficient than traditional hardware-based implementations in a Von Neumann computer or an FPGA.
