Owen Marshall completed a 4-year MPhys degree in Physics at the University of Manchester, UK, in 2004 and went on to earn his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2009 while working in the Semiconductor Physics Group of the Cavendish Laboratory. His PhD research centred on the design, fabrication and characterisation of THz quantum cascade lasers (QCLs), with a particular emphasis on photonic crystal laser waveguides for frequency control and beam-shaping, as well as high frequency direct modulation of THz QCLs.

After completing his PhD, Owen returned to the University of Manchester as a post-doctoral researcher in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. From 2009 he continued to work on novel THz QCL waveguides, first incorporating non-random aperiodic photonic structures for multi-frequency control, and later integrating graphene into the plasmonic QCL waveguides. He subsequently took up a post-doctoral position within the Condensed Matter Physics Group in Manchester, where from 2013 he primarily worked on the optical characterisation of state-of-the-art graphene-based devices (and other 2D materials), ranging from optical modulators and metamaterials, to electrically-driven hydrogen isotope sieves.

In 2017, Owen joined Ghent University-IMEC, Belgium, where his current research focuses on the combination of 2D materials with photonic integrated circuits.
