Silicon photonics for lab-on-chip spectroscopy

Absorption spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy are powerful techniques to identify the presence and concentration of molecules in a fluid or a gas. Typically these spectroscopy techniques are performed by means of rather large instruments. In this research area we aim to miniaturize them in the form of a chip, and to do so by means of CMOS-compatible techniques. This approach allows to implement spectroscopic applications, eg detection of CO, in compact mobile devices and even in bodily implants. Furthermore the wafer-scale fabrication of these chips may turn them into a commodity and may enable ubiquitous usage of spectroscopic functions.
