Large-scale Photonic Integration

Silicon Photonics has the potential to integrate >10000 optical functions on a chip. With this large-scale integration comes the potential of creating very complex functionalities that cannot be realized in any other way. However, this requires the capabilities to fabricate, design and operate very large optical circuits. While fabrication capabilities are steadily increasing, there are limits on the size of circuits that can be designed today, especially when dense interconnetcivity is required. Also, controlling large circuits, which are inherently prone to some variability, is not trivial. We address the challenges to realize large-scale photonic circuits based on existing manufacturing platforms (in particular IMEC's silicon photonics platforms) by develping new design methods, circuit topologies and control algorithms.
